New Databases Available for Library Card Holders
Jackson County Public Library is part of a 4-county cooperative that also includes Calhoun, Holmes, and Washington county libraries. This cooperative is known as Panhandle Public Library Cooperative System (PPLCS). One of the purposes of PPLCS is to provide resources to all the citizens of our member counties, and one of the most effective ways to do this is through digital resources. We currently offer to library card holders in each of the PPLCS counties online access to some fabulous resources. Go to http://www.PPLCS.net/ and check out zinio (magazines), One Click Digital (audiobooks and eBooks for adults and children), Axis 360 (eBooks), indieflix (independently produced films ranging from shorts to full length movies—viewers beware as these films are not rated) as well as Recorded Books ePrep (academic test preparation aids), Universal Class (classes that offer continuing education units on a large variety of subjects) and Signing Savvy (instruction in American Sign Language). All of these resources are free to library card holders.
We now offer free access to Rosetta Stone, English Language Learning, and NoveList Plus. Everyone is familiar with Rosetta Stone, and we are proud to be able to offer instruction in 30 different languages, available 24 hours a day on any device with internet access. English Language Learning is a program that will assist non-English speakers with assistance and instruction in not only the spoken English language but also with writing and other skills including basic math functions and financial information. NoveList Plus is what is known in the library world as a reader’s advisory database. What this means is that if you have a favorite author, you can find information on that author’s books, get a chronological list of all their publications, summaries of their books, names of their series, and if you’ve completely exhausted all their publications, you can find information about read-alikes which are authors that have similar styles or write in the same genres. NoveList Plus offers information on over 300,000 adult fiction titles as well as nonfiction, audiobooks, and children’s books on levels k – 8. We are very excited and pleased to offer these resources to our library patrons and will be glad to help you learn how to use these resources. Contact any PPLCS member library and they’ll be happy to help you.
We are happy to announce the addition of the TumblebookLibrary to our e-resources for our youngest patrons! The TumbleBookLibrary is a delightful collection of animated and talking picture books with fiction, non-fiction and foreign language titles. The collection also features Read-Alongs (chapter books with sentence highlighting and narration), TumbleTV (pre-set playlists of a sequence of books), and Tumble Puzzles & Games.
